It’s time for the Church of England to lay down the law on marriage

first_imgThe Telegraph 16 February 2017Family First Comment: Superb commentary: “People in society expect the Church to believe and teach the Bible. What other authority can the Church have? … The undeniable truth is that the Church can’t give its blessing to same-sex marriages when its sole source of authority does not.”Wednesday’s vote in Synod was not a victory for the LGBT lobby. In whatever way that vote in synod is spun, the real issue is not about same-sex marriage but about the authority of the Bible in the Church of England. The effect of the vote is that there is no change in doctrine or practice. Marriage remains, as it has for all Christendom, a lifelong union between a man and a woman. This moment presents a great opportunity for the House of Bishops to embrace that truth and to act to uphold it firmly within the Church, disciplining those who would seek to abandon the authority of the Bible, and whose actions will eventually bring down the Church by actively denying that truth. The Bishops’ Report on Marriage and Same Sex Relationships was in danger of weakening the Church’s teaching. It sought to hold together two positions that are irreconcilable – the orthodox position holding to the teaching of Jesus Christ, and the alternative which seeks to revise his teaching by insisting on acceptance of same-sex marriage.People in society expect the Church to believe and teach the Bible. What other authority can the Church have? Moreover, God’s people are called to be “set apart” and clergy are supposed to be examples to their people. Today, however, a crucial faultline has opened up in the Church of England because it has permitted those who openly defy the teaching of Jesus into positions of authority and influence. Male clergy who declare to Synod their “marriages” to other men are applauded, despite the fact that this is directly contrary to the Church’s own teaching.READ MORE: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/02/16/time-church-england-lay-law-marriage/last_img read more

HUGE RESPONSE TO DCCC PRESENT APPEAL BUT 1,300 CHILDREN STILL NEED GIFTS

first_imgThe Donegal County Childcare Team has revealed it has received requests from 530 families for presents for more than 1,300 children this Christmas.Percy with Donegal County Childcare Committee last year. Pic Clive WassonLast weekend the DCCC revealed it was saddened at not being in a position to meet all family’s requests such was the huge volume of requests. The team at Donegal County Childcare are delighted with the generous response to the Presents for Percy Appeal since the publication of the open letter by DCCC Manager Avril Mc Monagle on Sunday last on Donegal Daily. Avril said since Monday morning at 9am, members of the public have been dropping by the DCCC Office to lend a hand. We have had everything from small pocket money donations from children to larger donations from businesses.Transition year students from a secondary school in Falcarrgh are organasing a fundraiser as a school project, shop workers have set up collection boxes and local businesses have pledged donations.Anonymous individuals have made online donations, young people will be collecting outside a nightclub in Letterkenny at the weekend and Supervalue have put a number of collection points at different branches in place.Avril’s letter has been viewed almost 15,000 times on the DCCC Facebook page and has been shared widely. Unlike other appeals for general toys, the Presents for Percy Appeal is unique as it aims to respond to the actual preferred Santa choices of children themselves.DCCC and the 19 organisations operating as distributers for the appeal, actually purchase specific toys and gifts that children have requested. By taking this targeted approach, parents are prevented from getting into unnecessary debt.Avril said – currently we have requests on behalf of 530 families with 1,300 children. To date we have raised €18,000 but still have a shortfall of approximately €10,000. Although the appeal aims to provide a maximum allocation of €50 per child, some organisations have applied for as little as €12 per child. So every small amount makes a huge difference.A big thank you to everyone so far for supporting the appeal and to the Donegal media for helping us spread the word. If you would like to donate money to the appeal Cheques/Postal Orders can be made payable to the Presents for Percy Appeal, and sent to Donegal County Childcare, 10-11 St Columba’s Terrace, High Road, Letterkenny. World T20: Mendis’s quest to regain lost zip and momentum

first_imgAjantha Mendis seems to be in love with the number six. Six for 13 against India in the Asia Cup four years ago launched his career into orbit, six for 16 against Australia in Pallekele brought him the best figures in T20 internationals last year, and it was a six-for again that blew away Zimbabwe in Hambantota on Tuesday and gave him the second-best figures in all Twenty20 cricket.Mendis has had a difficult time over the last few years after starting off his career like there was no tomorrow. Most teams have started reading him from the hand, and his mystery has diminished manifold. But when Colombo woke up on Wednesday morning, Mendis was back to being the talk of the town. The World Twenty20 is, in any case, the primary thing on the minds of the Sri Lankan people right now, and it was difficult not to get excited about a bowling performance that was more than just a walk in the park against a minnow team.Mendis is returning from an eightmonth layoff due to a back injury, but his performance moved his captain, Mahela Jayawardene, to sing paeans in his honour.Ajantha was very keen to get back into the side and we saw that hunger in him.We wanted to make sure that he went through the processes and get his back sorted out, which is why we kept him away for this long.Hes come back strongly and hopefully hell continue to do the job. I am sure hell have bad days, but the quality of the player is that hell have more good days than bad,?? Jayawardene said. But Mendis is an endearingly simple lad, and though his discomfort with answering in English might be a reason, all he said after the game was: I am very happy that my return to the team was good. This was my first game, so I was a bit nervous, but the confidence given to me by my captain and teammates helped me a lot.?? There are sterner tests ahead for the son of a carpenter from Moratuwa. Not just in this tournament, where the South Africans and other top teams lie in wait, but in rediscovering his mojo in all formats of the game. After all, it would be a waste of a supreme talent if a bowler who took 26 wickets in his first three Tests against the likes of Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly, fades away with a career average of [email protected]last_img read more

OSU lost, 3-0.Credit: Courtesy of FacebookAfter back-to-back losses to top-10 squads, the Ohio State field hockey team will continue play away from home when it travels to Oxford to take on Miami (Ohio).Coming off a weekend of play in which the team held opponents to one goal each in both matches, the Buckeyes are ready to battle again Wednesday.Coach Anne Wilkinson said Miami will be coming after them hard on the field.“We, being Ohio State, have a lot of pressure put on us. Miami is going to be coming at us strong with everything they have, so we really need to win this in-state game,” she said.Wilkinson said time in practice has been split between working on defense and offense equally.“We worked a lot on our defense and covering the ball and then we would switch and work with the offense,” Wilkinson said. “We just need to focus on meshing the two together and make sure the defense doesn’t forget what we worked on when we switch to offense.”Senior midfield and co-captain Nora Murer pointed out some of the areas the team has been struggling with, including their inability to capitalize on penalty corners.“We practiced before and after practice on our corners which I would say is still a weak spot of ours,” Murer said.Senior midfield  and co-captain Arielle Cowie said she is coming into the game expecting a win, and wants to see the team live up to its potential.“I am looking forward to winning,” Cowie said. “Last weekend we played so well together. We didn’t finish our chances but those two games just showed the potential that we have and I think coming out tomorrow we are going into that game and we know this is our game.”The main focus is on being a team that works together for the full 70 minutes, Cowie said.“We are just going to focus on really playing together and that’s all we need to do because individually, we have it but we just need to put it together and score on our chances,” Cowie said.Murer said if the Buckeyes continue to play the way they did this past weekend, the team will have no trouble securing the win against Miami.“We just need to really play on the same level from the weekend and we will be good for (Wednesday’s) game,” Murer said. The game is scheduled to begin Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Buckeyes are then set to travel to face Kent State Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. read more
