In addition, the cooperative will launch the Ocean Spray Cranberry Health Institute in 2018.Besides helping consumers meet their recommended daily intake of fruit, Ocean Spray said the fruit may reduce the occurrence of certain infections in the urinary tract and stomach, ‘as more than 50 years of well-documented research has shown’.To advance antibiotic stewardship education and training, the Ocean Spray Cranberry Health Institute has partnered with several third-party organisations, including the National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration (NADONA).The institute will provide a new annual award recognising the most progressive antibiotic stewardship programme nationally and an antibiotic stewardship leader nominated by their facility.Ocean Spray CEO Randy Papadellis said the cooperative is dedicated to finding ways to address global health issues.“With antibiotic resistance on track to kill more people than cancer, the World Health Organization has called on government sectors and society to take action on this serious threat to global public health,” he said.  “We want to be sure that Ocean Spray does our part to look at all the components of this one-of-a-kind fruit and how it can contribute to whole-body health.”Chief clinical officer of NADONA Hudson Garrett added: “Antimicrobial resistance is the biggest public health crisis facing us globally. For example, E. coli, the cause of many UTIs, is proving extremely resistant to fluoroquinolone antibiotics, the most commonly prescribed treatment.“Identifying near-term solutions requires dedicated public-private partnerships like the new Cranberry Health Institute.”To help the Ocean Spray Cranberry Health Institute best understand the important role cranberries can play in preventing disease and supporting health, research is already underway with a collaboration between the Broad Institute, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Washington University’s Center for Women’s Infectious Disease Research.Ocean Spray is owned by more than 700 cranberry and grapefruit growers in the US, Canada and Chile. It employs more than 2,000 people and has almost 20 cranberry processing facilities.Share with your network: Tags: CranberriesOcean Spraylast_img read more

Facebook Share Facebook Share on Facebook Share on Facebook | Pick Reply Facebook Share Share on Facebook Twitter | Pick Persianwar Report They aren’t doing that either…. Share on Twitter The US is a European descendant. It often shows. Let’s be honest about it for goodness’ sake! Share on Twitter Twitter Twitter Report It will take political will, imagination and hard work. But I believe we can succeed, for three simple reasons.Firstly, differences of opinion are nothing new. We had them during the Suez crisis in 1956. We had them when France withdrew from Nato’s command structure in 1966, and the alliance had to move its headquarters from Paris to Brussels. And we had them during the Iraq war in 2003.We are 29 democracies with different histories, geographies and cultures, so of course we sometimes disagree. But the historical record shows that, despite our differences, we have always been able to unite around our common goal: standing together and protecting each other. The second reason we can preserve the transatlantic bond is what is happening in Nato today. After the cold war, when the threat from the Soviet Union receded, the US and Canada gradually reduced their presence in Europe, and European allies cut defence spending. This was the so-called “peace dividend” enjoyed by allies on both sides of the Atlantic. But both those trends are now firmly in reverse. The US and Canada are stepping up their commitment to Europe’s security. In fact, since coming to office, the Trump administration has increased funding for the US presence in Europe by 40%. The last US battle tank left Europe in 2013, but now they are back in the form of a whole new US armoured brigade. This isn’t a one-way street. European allies, with the UK in the vanguard, are stepping up, too – spending billions more on defence and taking responsibility for Euro-Atlantic security alongside their North American allies. The third and final reason I am hopeful the political storm clouds will pass is that it is in our profound interest to stay united. Two world wars and a cold war have taught us this: together, Europe and North America are stronger, safer and more prosperous. That is why young American and Canadian soldiers fought on the western front in the first world war, and why their sons fought their way across the beaches of Normandy almost 30 years later. It is also why allies invoked article 5 of the Nato Treaty – our collective defence clause – just hours after the 9/11 attacks, the first and only time in our history. And why hundreds of thousands of European and Canadian troops have served shoulder to shoulder with Americans in Afghanistan to defeat international terrorism, with more than a thousand paying the ultimate price. It is – and has always been – in our fundamental interest to stand together on defence. And that is as true now as ever. Because we face the most unpredictable security environment in a generation: international terrorism, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, cyberattacks – and, of course, a Russia that has used force against its neighbours, that tries to meddle in our domestic affairs, and that seems to have no qualms about using military-grade nerve agents on our streets.I believe that we, as the west, must be confident. We must continue to work hard to settle our differences – and where differences persist, we must limit any negative impact on our security cooperation. We must continue to protect multilateral institutions like Nato, and continue to stand up for the international rules that have served us so well for so many decades. In that broadcast, more than 65 years ago, Ismay also warned that “we must never be complacent” and that “the road may be rough”.North America and Europe represent half the world’s economic might and half the world’s military might. Our achievements side by side are unprecedented. So as long as we stand together, even if the road does indeed get rough, it will always lead in the right direction: peace and security for our nations and our nearly one billion citizens.• Jens Stoltenberg is the secretary general of Nato Share on Facebook Share Share on Facebook 26 27 Share on Twitter Share Share on Twitter Facebook Share on LinkedIn b_lunt_ma_n Share on Facebook Facebook Show 10 more replies 8 9 (shrug). Consumer Highlight Wade Jackson Sr

first_imgShare this…TwitterFacebookPinterestLinkedInEmailPrint RelatedATU161 – RESNA 2014 Conference CoverageJune 27, 2014In “Assistive Technology Update”ATU200 – Wade Wingler is interviewed by Danny Wayne in This Special Celebration of 200 Episodes of Assistive Technology UpdateMarch 27, 2015In “Assistive Technology Update”ATU288 – 2016 Holiday Shopping Episode – Part 2December 2, 2016In “Assistive Technology Update” I visited Wade Jackson Sr. to learn about the services he received through Easterseals Crossroads. I learned that in 2009, Wade was working three jobs. One of his jobs was working as a prep cook at Texas Roadhouse restaurant. After he finished the rush hour shift during the Christmas season at Texas Roadhouse, he got in his car and he could not see out of his windshield. He decided to drive to the gas station by looking out of the driver’s side window. He told me, “ I cleaned the window four times and could not get it cleaned”.The next day he went to his mother’s house to celebrate Christmas with his ten sisters and four brothers. He said, “ I was sitting at the table and I felt like everyone was looking at me. There was a light over the kitchen table and my sister said, “Don’t you see that spider coming down in front of you? You need to have an eye exam.”It was then he first realized that it might have been trouble with his vision, not a dirty windshield in his car, and scheduled an eye exam for the next day at Walmart. During the exam, Wade was told that he had Glaucoma and that the disease was pretty far advanced and he had a lot of fluid pressure in both eyes. Glaucoma is an eye condition that damages the optic nerve. It can cause blindness if untreated.Wade told me that he had worn steel toe boots into Walmart and as he was leaving with the devastating news that he had Glaucoma his boots set off the security alarm. He said that a security guard took him back into the recovery area because they thought he had stolen the boots. The security guard finally determined that Wade’s brand of boots did not come from their store and released him. Wade told me it was a terrible day that he will never forget. After the vision exam at Walmart, he went to see an eye specialist. He then had three surgeries trying to keep the pressure down in his eyes. Unfortunately, none of the surgeries worked. Wade told me, “All the sight that I have is just through a pin hole.” He has now formed cataracts on his pupils that cannot be laser removed because they are afraid that he would loose the last bit of sight that he does have. He has a lot of pain in his eyes. He told me that in addition to daily pain that the weather changes cause him a lot more pain.Wade told me the hardest thing about losing his vision was losing his license to drive. At the time I met with him, he has not been able to work because he is not able to drive and is in constant pain. When he lost his vision, he visited Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) to find out what resources might be available to him. Vocational Rehabilitation is a state agency that helps people with disabilities obtain or maintain employment.Vocational Rehabilitation first referred him to Bosma Enterprises to learn some independent living skills. He learned how to navigate his surroundings and they got him a lot of talking assistive technology devices such as a talking thermostat and a talking clock. VR then referred him to Easterseals Crossroads for an assistive technology evaluation. An assistive technology evaluation is a one-on-one evaluation to determine the appropriate assistive technology to meet an individual’s needs at home, work, or in the community. He was assigned to work with Rebecca Carpenter who is an Assistive Technology Specialist at Easter Seals Crossroads. Rebecca worked with Wade on how to access a computer and written material.Rebecca said, “I began working with Wade using ZoomText; however, I realized that this tool wasn’t the only one he would need so we supplemented with NVDA. Wade learned the keystrokes quickly and was excited to be able to correspond electronically to pay his bills. He also owned an iPhone, but was not familiar with the different options available to him, such as VoiceOver. I taught him the gestures and how to use Siri to schedule appointments, give weather information, search the web, et cetera. I think his favorite assistive technology item was the DaVinci CCTV. Watching his face light up as he was able to scan and read his bills without straining his eyes was one of my favorite moments while working with him.”ZoomText is a screen magnification software that enlarges and enhances everything on a computer screen. NVDA is an open source screen reader, which enables blind and visually impaired people to use a computer because it reads the text on the computer screen. DaVinci is a desktop video magnifier with an HD screen and text-to-speech device. It allows you to magnify anything put under the camera. Wade told me,  “I was so thankful when Becca brought me the magnifier and installed it. He said, “my mail that I couldn’t read had been piling up all over the house and I can now read it with the DaVinci”Wade told me that all of the assistive technology he has received allows him to live independently. He loves to be able to read his mail independently. He also uses the VoiceOver on his iPhone for “almost everything”. He told me, “I couldn’t believe I could use my finger to run over the screen and have the apps read to me. I use my phone to do so many things.”Wade also has a PenFriend Voice Labeling System, which is an electronic device that can be programed to read labels that are attached to any item. Wade uses these labels all over his house and then holds the pen over the label to identify the item. He uses them for all the food cans in his kitchen and labels electronics such as his DVD player with different labels on the play, fast forward, and rewind functions. Not only did Wade have the assistive technology evaluation and training, he also received a computer from The INDATA Project’s Computer Reutilization program. This program takes in donated computers and gives them away for free to individuals in the state of Indiana who have a documented disability. Rebecca installed the ZoomText software that Vocational Rehabilitation purchased for Wade on that computer and he now also has the NVDA screen reader on that computer.Wade said, “Without BOSMA, Easterseals Crossroads, and Vocational Rehabilitation I could not have done anything. I would not have known any of this technology existed. I didn’t want to just sit in this apartment and do nothing. I know I have to learn something new that I can do now that I have a visual impairment.” He said, “ If it wasn’t for Becca, I wouldn’t have even thought twice about using a computer in this condition and now I am.” Wade is looking forward to continuing to learn how to use a computer so he can get comfortable enough to begin job hunting down the road.I asked Wade if he had any advice for our readers and he told me he would tell people, “Get your eyes checked regularly. I don’t’ wish this on anyone. It’s been really hard.” He went on to say, “I would find out what resources are available to you. You don’t just have to sit around doing nothing.”last_img read more

Boeing Completes CST100 Starliner Parachute Testing

first_img The Most Offensive Video Game Characters of All Time Boeing and SpaceX have traded the lead a few times in the race to send a crewed spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS). Initially, Boeing was the favorite due to its long history navigating the intricacies of government contracts, but SpaceX pulled ahead on the strength of the Falcon 9 and a fuel leak that delayed Boeing. Now, SpaceX is looking at a delay after the loss of a Dragon 2 capsule during engine tests. Meanwhile, Boeing is back on track after completing its final and most challenging parachute test. Boeing’s CST-100 “Starliner” is a reusable spacecraft that builds on the design heritage of the Apollo command module. It has room for a crew of seven and can launch atop four different rockets: the Atlas V, Delta IV, Falcon9, and Vulcan. Testing has been underway in some form since 2011, but the timeline has slipped repeatedly. Boeing finally seems to be in the home stretch after the latest test. Being attached the CST-100 to a balloon above the US Army’s White Sands Missile Range last week. After reaching an altitude of 40,000 ft (12,200 meters), the balloon dropped the CST-100. The capsule has six parachutes to gently lower it to the ground following atmospheric reentry. Unlike past crewed vehicles, the CST-100 isn’t limited to water landings. In this four-minute test, three of the six parachutes had been intentionally disabled — two drogue chutes and one main. Boeing reports that the Starliner still managed a safe landing at White Sands thanks to its remaining parachutes and airbag system. SpaceX reportedly failed a similar parachute test with its Dragon II capsule. This was separate from the testing that led to the test stand explosion. The CST-100 can carry up to seven passengers to and from the ISS.This success keeps Boeing on track to complete its first launch test later this summer. This mission will be uncrewed, with the CST-100 maneuvering autonomously to the ISS and then returning to Earth. SpaceX completed a similar mission several months ago before the now-infamous explosion. If Boeing nails the uncrewed test, it could be ready for a NASA-approved crew mission in November of this year. The first passengers will be Michael Fincke, Christopher Ferguson, and Nicole Aunapu Mann. SpaceX has not announced a new testing schedule yet, but the delay could be measured in months. Now read:SpaceX completes successful test of parachutes for manned Dragon capsuleBoeing Reportedly Delaying Crew Capsule Flight by MonthsNASA May Launch Orion Crew Module on Commercial Rocket 2 Comments Facebook Twitter Linkedin Pinterest Google Plus Reddit Hacker News Flipboard Email Copy 0shares This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. How to Use Interactive Quizzes as a Marketing Medicine to Jumpstart Campaigns

first_img Candy CrushClash of ClansJumpstart CampaignsMarketing Medicineonline marketingSocial Media Previous ArticleMobile App Users Expect Better App Search and Recommendation ExperienceNext ArticleSwrve Helps KeyPoint Credit Union Achieve 248% Growth in Monthly App Usage How to Use Interactive Quizzes as a Marketing Medicine to Jumpstart Campaigns? Boris PfeifferJune 6, 2019, 5:59 pmJune 6, 2019 In this hyper-shareable Social Media-driven world, people voraciously search for answers to seemingly innocuous questions. What breed of dog are you? What color is your personality? And of course, which Harry Potter House do you belong to?Quizzes are one of the most shared contents on all of Social Media – and have been for a while. Visual content is 40 times more likely to be shared on social media. When you consider the enormous popularity of sites such as Buzzfeed, this begins to make sense.Online Advertising is changing. Ad blockers are on the rise, potentially causing advertisers up to $40 billion in revenue loss this year. Adding further insult to injury is the rise of the deadly disease, “Banner Blindness”, where consumers are ignoring what they perceive to be advertisements at an increasing level. Clearly, additional strategies to combat these trends are needed.Savvy Digital Marketing using quizzes to reach audiences allows you to avoid many of these modern-day problems and have proven to be effective tools to monetize. Simply put, if your company is not using quizzes, you’re missing out on a marketing gold mine. Here’s why.Read More: SiriusDecisions Summit 2019 Takeaways: Enablement May Not be a Word, But It’s Growing NonethelessTaking Advantage of the Social Media-Driven WorldA side effect of Social Media is, lowered attention spans. People are simply less likely to engage with content and unwilling to spend more than a few minutes with it. It’s an unfortunate reality that having a “clickbait” title is oftentimes more important than the actual content. With the current trends, it’s more challenging than ever to increase page views for your site.Quizzes are a unique answer to these modern-day problems, engaging with the audience from the start while being perfectly tailored for lowered attention spans. A well-designed quiz – which can include content ranging from personality tests to surveys to polls – is fun and interactive for the user in a bite-sized, quick to complete format. Many users, especially those on mobile devices, look for content to fill in the downtime between commercials or while waiting for a friend. Look no further than popular games such as Candy Crush or Clash of Clans, which are designed to be played no more than a few minutes at a time. Quizzes are designed in a similar manner: A well-tailored quiz should take no longer than three minutes – short and sweet, so the user doesn’t feel overwhelmed by a time-consuming endeavor. The ultimate goal is to get the person to share the results of their quiz to their followers, increasing the number of people viewing your site in a potentially endless chain of shares. Well-designed quizzes hold a high virality – meaning they have a high likelihood of being shared. Quizzes allow you to take advantage of our societal inclination towards virality to increase the page views on your site. When people share content on Social Media, they typically want to appear either humorous or intelligent to their followers. By designing your quiz results in this fashion – to either make their followers laugh or be impressed – the likelihood of it being shared is increased. In fact, there is a whole industry of freelancers who specialize in writing witty quiz results geared towards increasing page views.Getting Those LeadsAnother important component of quizzes is their effect on garnering leads for your company. Collecting the name, email and other information from interested leads is an essential marketing channel for businesses – and works especially well with quizzes. Why? Showing a lead generation form during the quiz before the results work well – the user is emotionally invested after answering questions and more likely to give their contact information in order to continue onward to their results. The email opt-in rate, or the percentage of people who give their email through a specific campaign, is critical in Digital Marketing. Quizzes can often get a 40 percent email opt-in rate – up to 20 times the average opt-in rate for all other campaigns.Of course, there is an art to this; you can’t just blatantly ask for the information. Mandatory lead-in forms to gain access to the quiz results have been proven to drastically lower the user response. In fact, you are more likely to receive an obviously fake email than a real one, as the user simply wants to receive the results of the quiz. Optional lead-in forms offering some kind of benefit – for example, a free consultation around their quiz results – are a much better way to gain user engagement.Quizzes also allow you to gain information about the customer in real-time in order to better suit their needs. It’s quite simple – instead of guessing what a customer needs, why not simply ask them?Take, for instance, a customer entering an e-commerce site that specializes in selling sports shoes. In order to more specifically market their products, the company will need to know more information about the customer – are they interested in running shoes, basketball shoes, or tennis shoes? A quiz can be geared towards gathering this information without being too forward with the customer. At the end of the short quiz, a lead generation form collects the data and the marketing team is able to send them much more detailed information tailored to each lead’s taste in shoes.Read More: The Three Promises Every Marketer Must MakeContinued Compatibility with Traditional Online MarketingQuizzes also allow for monetization in the form of in-quiz ads. This is one of the most traditional of ways to monetize and typically works due to the emotional connection that a consumer has to a quiz after spending three to five minutes answering questions.Hulu has perfected this in the video streaming industry, knowing that consumers are willing to wait the allotted time in order to finish watching their current program. The same works after devoting time to completing a quiz – you’re not just going to walk away before learning which Hunger Games character you are, are you?Another way to monetize with ads is to include a “call-to-action” button with a link to a relevant item. Banner blindness may be a disease, but with quizzes it is treatable. Going back to the sports shoe example, a link could go directly to a purchase screen for a specific shoe, depending on the results of the quiz. These tend to have great engagement rates from the customers.Millennials and the rapidly advancing Generation Z are warier than ever of online advertisements. In order to jumpstart your Online Marketing, an interactive, engaging quiz experience can be the best medicine – for both the customer and the marketer alike.Read More: Customer Experience 2020: Personalization is Keylast_img read more

Recommendations Are the New Dashboards

first_imgWith the growth of Business Intelligence (BI) and Analytics, dashboards are now pervasive and considered commonplace in the modern enterprise. We see them visualizing information for every type of organization, across every industry. They are embedded in websites, and they even (on occasion) make cameos in movies. Despite its ubiquity, the day of the dashboard as a static, stand-alone technology is quickly coming to an end. On the continuum between minds and machines, they are overly reliant on human inputs and are constrained by such elements. Yesterday’s dashboards are being upgraded with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning algorithms that transform them into dynamic tools—they are now able to use AI-powered recommendations to ensure that the intelligence being delivered to users across the entire enterprise is both relevant and actionable.Read More: GDPR Compliance: Decoding The Mood A Year LaterRecommendations Are Already PervasiveRecommendations are already pervasive in our everyday lives—impacting everything from the way we select a movie to what gadgets we buy online. Netflix uses a complex Machine Learning algorithm to recommend new shows and movies based on user demographics and previously watched content. Travel apps like Hopper and Travelocity recommend the best time to purchase flights for the lowest fare. And the global leader in retail, Amazon, has integrated recommendations into nearly every aspect of the purchasing process. These types of recommendations work to personalize the consumer experience—improving engagement levels and boosting loyalty. As this type of recommendation becomes more and more common, businesses are adopting AI-driven recommendations internally, too. For example, NBC uses algorithms to recommend not only which ads to show customers, but where to place them on a webpage. Another example of this type of enterprise recommendation is IBM’s Watson Marketing, which can use consumer demographic and social behavior data to recommend customer outreach programs for marketing departments.Read More: Navigating GDPR: Preparing for What’s to ComeRecommendations in BI?Aside from Machine Learning applications, what can recommendations do for the BI and Analytics industry? For starters, it can speed up the process of finding insights and make creating dashboards and charts more accessible to every business user in an organization—even those without particular data skillsets. For example, recommendations implemented in a dashboard could immediately analyze the data and suggest suitable charts for visualizing important KPIs, all with zero clicks.Natural language processing (NLP) can also be used to create recommendations. With Natural Language querying, users can ask questions about their data in dossiers and receive answers in the form of new visualizations. Analysts can also quickly gain insights through dossier recommendations, which suggest dossiers authored by other users within an organization who have used similar metrics and attributes in their dashboards.Building on the momentum achieved so far, AI-powered improvements will only continue to revolutionize dashboarding and BI.Read More: Key Social Media Monetization Tactics for Mobile-First Gaming Brands AIanalyticsBusiness IntelligenceNetflixNew DashboardsNLP Previous ArticleCoSchedule Launches Marketing Suite to Transform the Way Marketers WorkNext ArticleSpotX and Mediaocean Announce Integration Giving TV Buyers Direct Pipeline to Premium Video Supply Recommendations Are the New Dashboards Hugh OwenJune 25, 2019, 9:00 amJune 21, 2019 last_img read more

Nobody Has Courage to Make Movie on Prophet Mohammed Says Giriraj Singh

first_imgNew Delhi: Hours after a Bihar court granted him bail in a poll code violation case for making controversial remarks against the Muslim community, Union minister Giriraj Singh Tuesday made another provocative statement. In an apparent reference to the controversial Malayalam movie, the minister said anybody can make a film like Sexy Durga but nobody has the courage to make one on Prophet Mohammed or Fatima. Addressing a public meeting in support of BJP’s South Delhi candidate Ramesh Bidhuri, the minister also used a Hindi slur against Aam Aadmi Party leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.Giriraj Singh charged that Kejriwal is part of the tukde tukde gang and is stalling the prosecution of formerJ awaharlal Nehru University student leader Kanhaiya Kumar in a sedition case. The minister who is the BJP candidate for Bihar’s Begusarai seat, from where Kanhaiya Kumar too is contesting the Lok Sabha elections, said the BJP will set this right when it comes to power.Earlier in the day, the minister surrendered before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Begusarai and was granted bail in the poll violation case. The Election Commission had issued a show cause notice to Giriraj Singh over his anti-Muslim remarks at an election rally. I didn’t say any such thing in Begusarai, still a case was registered against me. I just said that the slogan Vande Mataram made India independent. I said the country will show the door to any person who can’t chant Vande Mataram, he said at the meeting in Delhi. The Hindus were abused in Begusarai. Some people said Hindus eat beef and drink liquor at night. I informed the Election Commission, but it too didn’t take action, the minister said. Abusing Hindus has become a habit for some people, he said.Referring to the movie that was later released as S Durga, he said if he would send to hell anyone who referred to his mother or sister in such terms. Giriraj Singh also mentioned the burqa ban in Sri Lanka after the recent terror attacks there. bihargiriraj singhLok Sabha elections 2019prophet mohammed First Published: May 8, 2019, 12:00 AM ISTlast_img read more

Leila Review Science Meets Extremism to Create a Terrifying Dystopian NearFuture

first_imgLeilaDirectors: Deepa Mehta, Shanker Raman and Pawan KumarCast: Huma Qureshi, Rahul Khanna, Siddharth, Arif Zakaria, Seema Biswas, Sanjay Suri What if you woke up in a world where fresh air and clean water were the biggest luxuries? What if you were forced to submit to a totalitarian government that segregates people based on caste, religion and economic status? What if your child is taken away from you because his parents are from different communities?Netflix’s Leila raises these questions, and more. The miniseries shows a world where religious fanaticism, extremism and progress in science can make a deadly combination which can place your life completely in control of the state and its beliefs. The medieval, conservative and regressive ideals of this totalitarian government robs the people of a basic human right – the freedom to choose. Leila is set in the year 2047, in a fictional nation called Aryavarta, which is completely under the control of its leader, Dr Joshi (Sanjay Suri). The motto of this nation is peace by segregation. Cities are divided into sectors with sky-high walls. Each sector has one community, free to practice their beliefs, but not free to build a relationship with anyone from another caste or religion.Beyond the high walls of Aryavarta are the Doosh, who live in the Basti. They are not allowed inside Aryavarta, have to scrounge for clean water and live in filthy conditions amid huge piles of garbage. A constant cloud of haze hangs on Aryavarta, a sign of extreme pollution. The clouds shower black droplets of rain. Shalini Pathak (Huma Qureshi), a member of the topmost strata, watches her life change overnight as her Muslim husband (Rahul Khanna) is lynched in their own home and her daughter is snatched from her because she is of mixed blood. Thus begins Shalini’s journey of bondage, struggle and protest as she sets out to look for her daughter and ends up joining the rebels against the totalitarian government. What the series lacks in terms of pace and thrill, more than makes up for in its mise en scène and premise. Huma is thankfully measured in her delivery, considering the camera focuses on her for most part of the series. In some parts, it feels as if the storytellers focused so much on the ideals and premise of the show, that some areas of progress in science were overlooked. For example, you’d expect the automobile sector to make way more progress in 2047 than just fit cars with a futuristic sound when the doors close. The buses and public transport vehicles look uncomfortably basic. You will be reminded of Hunger Games and In Time in the economic categorisation in this dystopian world. The scenes of Huma in the women’s purification centre – with their uniform clothing, ritualistic life – are visual and thematic reminders of The Handmaid’s Tale. So, this adaptation of Prayaag Akbar’s novel of the same name is not entirely unique in its creation of a dystopian world. The context is Indianised, of course, and exaggerated to create an authoritarian set-up.The scariest part about Leila isn’t the oppression and lack of choice in the name of peace and progress, it is the realisation that it’s a world not too far from reality. Most of the ideals that this fictional nation propagates are frighteningly familiar. The lines between fiction and reality are often blurred. The dictatorship is formed because social order has broken down following severe air pollution and depletion of water resources. Which makes Leila a harsh reminder that if consumption of natural resources aren’t controlled, if we continue to pollute our nature, then one day we might have to pay a heavy price to have our taps running. Clean water, fresh air and freedom will be luxuries only a few can afford. Leila’s world is imaginary, but not impossible. 2047 is just 28 years away.Rating: 3.5/5Follow @News18Movies for more Arif ZakariaAryavartaDeepa MehtaHuma Qureshi First Published: June 15, 2019, 3:46 PM ISTlast_img read more

Pokemon GO is fun again for real this time

first_imgOver the past couple of weeks I’ve begun playing Pokemon GO again after not playing for a few months. I’ve kept the app – mostly because I write about Pokemon GO pretty often here on SlashGear – but I’d quit playing for the most part for the past few months. Now that the latest update to Pokemon GO has changed the way the Pokemon Gym is run, the game is entirely entertaining once more. Tell your kids, tell your wife, tell your husband, because it’s fun up in here again. Story TimelinePokemon GO Raid Distance and new Promo Codes [Try these!]Exclusive: SHINY Pikachu coming to Pokemon GONew Pokemon GO Update with Anniversary Event! [APK download]Pokemon GO Update’s RAID Bug: a glitch is stealing monsters! This latest update to Pokemon GO enacts a set of changes to the Pokemon Gym system that change the way the game is played. Instead of stacking up 10 Pokemon to rule a gym essentially forever, the new system encourages change-outs. The new system encourages battles and forces players to submit a variety of Pokemon to defend each Gym.Where the game was dominated by cheaters and hardcore players before, now the game is open and accepting of players of all sizes. Take a peek at a local Pokemon Gym and there’s a distinct possibility that a Pokemon under CP 1000 will be there. It’s a place where we no longer need the Joker Gang, basically. The latest update also brings out the team-based battle action in the form of RAID Battles. This sort of battle has several Pokemon GO trainers battling against a single mega-sized Pokemon. Once that Pokemon is defeated, the whole bunch of trainers get rewards and a chance to capture the Pokemon they’ve battled (in normal size, not quite mega-size). The push for a new Gym system is complete – and each time a user heads to a gym there’s a reward, even if they do not want to take part in a battle. Users can choose to spin the Gym like a Pokestop and/or give berries to Pokemon defending said gym – this also gives the user rewards. New items have been introduced, and more are on the way.Give Pokemon GO a try again if you’ve quit over this past winter or spring – it’s worth the effort. Today being the 1-year anniversary of Pokemon GO’s initial release, it’s the perfect time to get back in the mood to catch em all. Also have a peek at our @TeamPokemonGO Twitter portal for Pokemon GO leaks, tricks, and meme-time fun all the time. last_img read more
